Folklore

Manish Arora

Manoush Arora is an Indian fashion designer. I love this colourfull design! This is the S/S 2011 runway show.

When I look at the dress it seems to me it is the anatomy of the hyman body. It looks like bones to me. But then much prettier with all the gold and the funky colours.

Jale by Heike Sperber 2010

It is a simple transformation that allows a frosty snowflake to blossom into a sunny flower. It only takes a minor rearrangement to convey the transition from a sharp cold structure to an organic life form. With the help of a servo motor fabric flaps are turned over to accomplish the change of season in the patchwork.

The pattern is reminiscent of Islamic mosaics and demonstrates the versatility of these designs. The quilting technique is known as English Paper Piecing and the title ‘Jale’ is Persian for morning dew or dewdrop.

This work by Heike Sperber was part of the exhibition Pretty Smart Textiles. prettysmarttextiles.com

Illuminated Sculptural Costumes

Lianna Sheppard sculpts bold and beautiful sculptural forms anchored around the human body. In her recent project for her MA at Kingston University, she created origami-inspired costumes that fold, pleat and illuminate. The lighting projections add a poetic and ephemeral dimension to an otherwise minimal and severely architectural silhouette.
